Ukraine says it has recaptured more than a mile of territory held by the Russians in the eastern city of Bakhmut, but Russia denied any Ukrainian gain. “The individual declarations on Telegram about a ‘breakthrough’ on several points on the frontline do not correspond to reality,” Russia's defence ministry said.
Ukraine Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said Russia suffered significant troop losses, while Ukraine gained two kilometers without losing any positions. Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group that is fighting on the Russian side, accused regular Russian troops of abandoning positions in Bakhmut and said, “The situation on the flanks is developing according to the worst predicted scenario.” Russian military bloggers also reported Ukrainian advances and troop movements in several areas.
The Ukrainian air force made 14 strikes on Russian forces and military equipment on May 11, and Ukraine destroyed nine Russian drones while carrying out successful attacks on dozens of military targets. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky said it is too early to begin a Ukrainian counter-offensive with the newly-arrived Western weapons. “With [what we already have] we can go forward and, I think, be successful, but we’d lose a lot of people. I think that’s unacceptable. So we need to wait. We still need a bit more time.”
Perry To Face Charges In Homeless Man’s Death
Authorities plan to charge 24-year-old Daniel Penny with second-degree manslaughter today in the death of a homeless man in New York, New York. A freelance journalist captured the May 1 incident on video as Penny held 30-year-old Jordan Neely around the neck for two minutes and 55 seconds after Neely had been shouting at other subway passengers and asking for money. Neely was unconscious when taken from the carriage to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The city’s medical examiner said Neely’s death was the result of neck compression.
Penny’s lawyers say he could not have known that subduing Neely would lead to his death. Penny told other riders to call the police during the struggle.
A witness to the altercation said Neely was shouting about being hungry and thirsty, but Penny’s attorneys said Penny and two other passengers acted in self-defense because Neely’s behavior was “the apparent result of ongoing and untreated mental illness” and they wanted to protect themselves until help arrived.
Fisherman Drowns On Bow Lake
Allan Schuh of Plymouth, Massachusetts, went fishing on Bow Lake in Strafford on May 9. When he did not return home, his wife reported him missing. On May 10, a New Hampshire Fish and Game Dive Team recovered Schuh’s body from the lake.
The search had begun Tuesday afternoon, but was called off when he had not been found by the time darkness fell. The search resumed on Wednesday, and divers recovered his body around 10 a.m., about 15 feet off shore, in approximately eight feet of water. Schuh was not wearing a life jacket.
New Hampshire Fish and Game is investigating the cause of the accident. Assisting the department in the search were the New Hampshire Marine Patrol, New Hampshire State Police, Strafford police and fire departments, Barrington Police Department, Rochester Fire Department, and Barnstead Fire Department.
‘By The Way’ Launches On Substack
This week, I launched By The Way to showcase stories I am working on, as I work on them. The goal is to give subscribers an early look at the freelance stories that sell and those that may not be picked up but which can still be of interest. Not to mention providing a little cash support for the unpaid hours I put in on the stories.
Here are the links to this week’s stories:
