A Shortage Of Expertise For Semiconductor Facility
Two Marine Patrol officers responding to a distress call about boaters in the water off Round Island on Lake Winnipesaukee on July 19 found themselves in the water when their boat capsized while trying to retrieve the runaway vessel.
The Marine Patrol officers had found two people injured after being ejected when their boat struck a rock. The officers got the victims into their boat and the Gilford Fire Department sent its own vessel to take the victims to shore. The officers then attempted to get the runaway boat which had continued to travel after the collision. They attempted to throw a line in the water to snag the propeller and cause the boat to stall, but the boat “made an unexpected turn” and came at the Marine Patrol boat, capsizing it and sending the officers overboard, temporarily trapping them underneath. The boat continued on, dragging the capsized Marine Patrol vessel behind it.
Two civilians came to their rescue, climbing aboard the renegade vessel and bringing it to a stop and allowing the officers to climb aboard.
Case Solved But Perpetrator Now Dead
Investigators say they have solved a cold case homicide that took place in Portsmouth in 1981, but the alleged perpetrator died in 2005.
The previously unsolved murder of 23-year-old Laura Kempton took place in the early morning hours on September 28, 1981. She had last been seen entering her residence that morning, and her body was found shortly afterwards when a police office attempted to serve a court summons. An autopsy found she died from trauma to the left side of her head.
DNA from evidence collected at the time led the Portsmouth Police Department, working in conjunction with the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory, the Maine State Police Forensic Laboratory, the New Hampshire Attorney-General’s Cold Case Unit, and Identifiers International, to determine that the person responsible for Kempton’s death was Ronney James Lee, who was 25 at the time of the murder. Lee died of acute cocaine intoxication at age 45 on February 9, 2005.
Amsterdam: Cruise Ships Not In Line With Ambitions
The Amsterdam City Council has banned cruise ships as part of its sustainability ambitions, saying the ban will curb pollution and limit the number of visitors to the Dutch capital. The central cruise terminal on the River IJ will close.
The council also recently banned the smoking of cannabis on the streets of the red-light district.
Amsterdam is looking to curb tourism, with its reputation as a party city serving to attract 20 million visitors annually.
A Shortage Of Expertise For Semiconductor Facility
A shortage of skilled workers has led Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) to delay the start of production in Arizona, which was to begin next year. Chair Mark Liu said the production of advanced semiconductors in Arizona will begin in 2025.
TSMC announced plans for the Arizona facility in 2020, during the presidency of Donald Trump, and began construction in April 2021. Liu said the company found it has a shortage of workers in the United States with “specialized expertise required for equipment installation in a semiconductor-grade facility”.
To meet the need, Liu plans to send experienced technicians from Taiwan to train local workers.
