Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who is challenging President Joe Biden Jr. for the Democratic nomination for president in 2024, spent Saturday afternoon at Pumpkinfest in Laconia, remaining well into the evening to win over skeptical voters.
While the Democratic National Committee will not award delegates to winners in the New Hampshire primary because the state will not yield its first-in-the-nation status to South Carolina, a win here would help Phillips gain name recognition as he heads to other states.
Top New Hampshire Democrats are promoting a write-in campaign for Biden, who refused to appear on New Hampshire’s ballot because of its law requiring the state to hold the first national primary. However, between concerns about the president’s age and his dismissal of Granite State voters — as well as his controversial stance in support of Israel — even those who recognize Biden’s strong leadership and accomplishments during a first term are having second thoughts about supporting him for a second.
New Hampton Man Struck By Vehicle
Thomas Sevigny, 29, of New Hampton was taken to Concord Hospital-Laconia for treatment of life-threatening injuries sustained when a vehicle struck him on Route 104 east of the Burton Drive intersection in Meredith around 10:18 p.m. on October 29.
Officers responding to a 911 call from Mark Johnson, 72, of Meredith, the driver of the sports utility vehicle that struck Sevigny, found the victim lying in the eastbound shoulder of the highway.
Johnson was reported to be cooperating with investigators looking into the crash.
ILES Principal, Assistant Principal Resign Positions
Superintendent Mary Moriarty has announced that Inter-Lakes Elementary School Principal Michael Bryant and Assistant Principal Stephanie Howard have resigned after having been placed on leave following an incident in which a student assaulted a teacher at the elementary school on September 21.
Steven Kelley and Jeremy Hillger, whom Moriarty appointed to share principal duties last month, along with Kathleen Hill, who is acting as assistant principal, will remain in those roles through early December.
Moriarty plans to propose that Hill be named interim principal and Linda Otten — currently the dean of learning — be named interim assistant principal for the remainder of the year at the November meeting of the Inter-Lakes School Board.
Officer Disciplined For Holding Garbage, Not For Throwing It
Captain Ken Loui of the Manchester Police Department’s legal affairs division said Sergeant Mark Harrington has been suspended from VIP duty for “holding garbage from his meal break in his hand” while assigned to security detail for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ motorcade.
Documentary filmmaker Rod Webber’s camera captured Webber throwing a can of Red Bull energy drink at him as his sports utility vehicle passed by. However, Webber was not charged with assault.
“When he had to deal with an unexpected threat, Sgt. Harrington was holding garbage in the hand that he needed to use. This reflects poorly on him and the Manchester Police Department,” Loui wrote in an email to InDepthNH.org. “‘Neglect of Duty’ stems from the fact that Sgt. Harrington failed to properly document the incident with the requisite reports.”
