The New Hampshire State Police, in conjunction with members of the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department, Gorham Police Department, Lancaster Police Department, and Vermont State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a vehicle that was found submerged in the Connecticut River, south of the Lunenburg-Lancaster covered bridge.
The vehicle, which authorities say may have belonged to Alberta Leeman of Gorham, apparently had been in the Connecticut River for decades. Fish & Game personnel found the vehicle using specialized technology.
Alberta Leeman has been missing since 1978, but her disappearance is not considered suspicious. She was 63 years old at the time of her disappearance. Human remains were located in the submerged vehicle, but authorities have not yet made a positive identification.
Amherst Man Pleads Guilty To Threatening Congressmen
Ryder Winegar, 34, of Amherst, has pleaded guilty in federal court to six counts of threatening members of Congress and one count of transmitting interstate threatening communications, Acting United States Attorney John J. Farley announced.
Winegar left voicemails at the offices of six members of the United States Congress on December 16, 2020, threatening to hang them if they did not “get behind Donald Trump.” In a separate e-mail on December 14, to a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Winegar threatened to pull the representative from his bed and hang him.
“While political expression is protected speech, threats to commit acts of violence constitute serious federal crimes,” said Farley. “By threatening to kill members of Congress and a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, this defendant sought to intimidate public officials. As this prosecution demonstrates, such conduct is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.”
COVID Won’t Let Up
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control revealed three-quarters of the people contracting the Delta variant of COVID-19 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, were fully vaccinated. That throws another monkey wrench into the effort to encourage everyone to get vaccinated.
New data has shown that vaccinated people infected with the Delta coronavirus variant can have as much virus as those who are unvaccinated. That is the reason the CDC issued its latest mask guidance: Although vaccinated people play a small role in transmission, and breakthrough infections are rare, by wearing masks, they are helping to prevent the spread of the virus.
Anti-maskers point out that masks are not effective in protecting the wearer, but that is not the point of the guidance. A mask can prevent the wearer from spreading the virus to other people. In Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis has issued an executive order prohibiting mask mandates in schools, the coronavirus is running rampant, with case numbers climbing to an all-time high.
The CDC is not recommending masks for outdoor activities and where people can keep their distance from one another. The recommendation is for indoor spaces where people will spend a significant amount of time without the ability to maintain distances.
Some schools are extending the mask mandate to athletes competing outdoors. Parents who are concerned with such rules plan to attend tonight’s meeting of the Newfound Area School Board to voice their opposition to the school district’s mask policy.
