Just a month ago, very little ice appeared on New Hampshire lakes, but in late January the temperatures plunged to signal that the Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby should be able to go on as planned during the weekend of Feb. 13-14.
The Meredith Rotary Club held its first ice fishing derby in 1979 and the derby has continued every year since, although the club was forced to postpone it a few times to wait for better ice.
The operation will adapt to meet COVID-19 guidelines, but the club emphasized what doesn’t change: Everyone needs a ticket to win; all prizes will be awarded; anglers can fish any public water body in New Hampshire; Derby Headquarters will still be in Hesky Park in Meredith; derby merchandise will be available for sale; and prizes can either be picked up at Derby Headquarters or they will be mailed to winners.
Public safety officials are still urging everyone to be extremely careful and to check on the ice thickness before heading onto a frozen body of water.
Probe Into Fatal Boat Crash Ends
New Hampshire Marine Patrol Captain Timothy Dunleavy has announced that an investigation into the fatal boat crash that killed 76-year-old James A. Hanson and 84-year-old Harold C. Lyon Jr., and injured Hanson’s wife, Carmella, on November 9, 2019, has concluded that neither party was responsible.
“The causes, really, were circumstances that put these two individuals on the same path,” Dunleavy said.
Lyon was heading into his Bear Island residence while the other was heading out toward Meredith when the crash occurred.
‘Chucky’ Doll Amber Alert
The Amber Alert warned that “a child had been abducted by Chucky, a 28-year-old male with red or auburn hair and blue eyes who stands 3 feet 1 inch tall,” the New York Times reported. “His race was given as ‘Other: Doll.’”
The Texas Department of Public Safety apologized for the alert that went out last Friday to people who had subscribed to the Texas alerts system. They described the alert as a test malfunction.
The message said Chucky had abducted Glen, a 5-year-old boy wearing a blue shirt with a black collar. (The Times noted that the film “Seed of Chucky” (2004), portrays a doll named Glen who is the child of Chucky, the killer doll that was introduced in the 1988 slasher film “Child’s Play,” and continued through a series of horror films.) The alert said Chucky and Glen were last seen in Henderson, Texas, 130 miles southeast of Dallas.
