Conservation officers and volunteers from the Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team carried out a 16-year-old camper who sustained a head injury on the Falling Waters Trail in Lincoln on July 4. The girl, part of a group of campers and counselors from Camp Brookwood/Deer Run in Alton, had fallen while navigating a steep, muddy section of the trail on Sunday morning. The LinWood Ambulance carried her to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth for treatment, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
The group was about about one hour into an intended six-day hike through the Pemigewasset Wilderness when the accident occurred near Swiftwater Falls. Members of her party came to her aid and called 911, and a passing hiker with medical training assisted while waiting for the rescuers to arrive.
The rescue team carried her out to the trailhead on a litter and met the ambulance there.
As well-prepared as the campers were, Fish and Game said having a voluntary Hike Safe card is recommended to help cover the cost of such search-and-rescue operations.
Lack Of Insurance Prevents ATV Invasion
Androscoggin Valley ATV Club President Alex Smith has announced that the ATV Invasion festival, scheduled for July 30 and 31 at Jerico Gateway Family Campground, has been canceled because the club was unable to obtain adequate insurance coverage for the event.
“Although we have had no claims against our past event insurance policies, the hard insurance market has made our traditional coverage unavailable,” Smith said.
In past years, the Jericho ATV Festival has taken place at Jericho Mountain State Park, but his year’s ATV Invasion was planned for the private campground, which had obtained all necessary permits for the anticipated crowds. Campground owner Bruce Luksza said he was “shocked and very disappointed” at the news.
Wolfeboro Man Accused Of Killing Kittens
Twenty-five-year-old Brendan Elwell of Wolfeboro is facing animal cruelty charges after police connected him with the killing and mutilation of four kittens he had obtained through Craigslist, and leaving their remains along the public Bridge Falls Path last summer. The multi-use path runs along the shore of Back Bay, between the downtown railroad depot and Center Street in Wolfeboro Falls.
A game camera recorded a photo of a man standing by the boulders where some remains were found, but it was a call from an acquaintance in Wisconsin that cemented the connection with Elwell, police say. Jeffrey Smith told police he had received a call from Elwell, who was laughing and crying on the other end of the phone. “Mr. Elwell disclosed he had killed, skinned, and dismembered kittens,” according to the probable cause statement by Staff Sergeant Guy Maloney of the Wolfeboro Police Department.
“Mr. Elwell stated he was the person who placed them in the park and that he has thrown them at cars while he has driven down the road. Additionally, Mr. Elwell stated he has thrown parts of the cats in the previous owners’ yards.”
