What Happened To Parental Choice?
By Joseph M. Weiss
Control Systems Cybersecurity Expert Joseph M. Weiss, an international authority on cybersecurity, control systems, and system security, sent us this article based on his “Unfettered Blog” in which Weiss weighs in on cybersecurity, science and technology, security emerging threats, and more.
The national focus on cyber security has been on data breach including ransomware which is what precipitated the August 25, 2021, White House Cyber security meeting. For IT networks, the focus on data breach is sufficient. However, the real concern for critical infrastructures is not data breach but equipment damage that can cause very extended outages and potentially kill people.
Chinese-made grid equipment is widely used in the US electric grid. Backdoors have been found in some of the Chinese-made equipment, bypassing all cyber security protections.
Securing the electric grid will require a combination of many different approaches, including making the economics of buying Chinese-made products less affordable, eliminating use of known Chinese-front companies providing grid equipment and services, addressing networking and engineering issues, changing the scope of the NERC CIPS (North American Electric Reliability Corporation critical infrastructure protection) to focus on the reliability and cyber security of the grid, not just routable networks, monitoring the process sensors off-line and in real time, and having engineering participation.
Do the Chinese “own” our electric grids and other infrastructures?
What Happened To Parental Choice?
Bristol resident John Sellers is among the parents advocating for parental choice when it comes to mask-wearing in public schools. School Administrative Unit 4 Superintendent Pierre Couture assured parents that the Newfound Area School District would not be requiring masks except when students are traveling on district buses, although he warned that the policy might change if there was a significant increase in COVID-19 cases within any of the schools.
When Sellers informed us that he had been notified of a change in policy, we left a message for the superintendent, seeking information on this year’s school opening and the mask mandate. Couture has not yet responded to our request for the information.
Here is Sellers’ letter concerning the issue:
Hello School Board,
Why are the students required to wear mask when at the meeting on August 9th according to the '“PLAN” they would start school without masks. The Superintendent did say it could change if HHS deemed it necessary which I do not think HHS did.
I would like to know if each one of you on the board was notified of the change and when. I can tell you as a parent, I was not notified and found out only when registering my daughter for band today.
I truly believe you are trying to destroy these kids phycology and self esteem and making them fearful of every thing that comes their way. This is a parent's choice not the school, we decide what is best for our kids not one superintendent.
Lastly, I will state AGAIN, masks do not work for just a couple simple reasons, kids don't wear them correctly, and particles are so small they pass through the masks because they are not N95 type or better.
Thanks,
John Sellers
