Some 100 people gathered on a damp, rainy day to mark the start of construction on the first of three structures in the Winnipesaukee River that will make it possible for kayakers and surfers to practice their skills on stationary waves.
Monday’s Mill City Park groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the partnerships between kayakers, businesses, nonprofit groups, banks, and community members with the City of Franklin.
Marty Parichand, who spearheaded the project, said those relationships were even more important than the whitewater park he has dedicated the last five years of his life in getting off the ground. “[A]lthough tangibly I’m very excited to serve so my arms fall off inside of a whitewater park, the intangible aspects, the growth that we’re seeing, the benefits to our community, and certainly the relationships I’ve been able to form with many of you are more important,” he said.
Laconia Driver Strikes At Least 5 Vehicles
Police investigating a vehicle crash in Sanbornton on July 11 learned that the driver, Connor Sullivan, 17, of Laconia, likely hit at least five other vehicles as he erratically drove north on Interstate 93.
State Police Trooper Micah Jones, who found Sullivan’s vehicle had crashed into an embankment after leaving the highway, has charged the man with driving while under the influence of intoxicating alcohol or drugs, operating without a valid license, and wrongful conduct after an accident. He will face the charges in Franklin District Court.
State Police Dispatch had received several calls from drivers between Concord and Sanbornton who said their vehicles had been struck, but the operator of the other vehicle did not stop.
Child Hospitalized After Car Crashes Into Home
A young girl injured when a sport utility vehicle crashed into her Salem home on July 10 was taken by ambulance to Lawrence (Massachusetts) General Hospital and later flown to a Boston hospital to undergo emergency surgery. She was listed in stable condition on Monday.
Salem police said Scott Dowd, 37, of Salem was driving a 2019 Acura RDX when it left the road and hit multiple bushes and trees before crashing into the home. Dowd was trapped inside the vehicle until emergency responders pulled him out through the windshield. He was treated at Lawrence General Hospital and released.
A preliminary investigation indicated that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, but police had filed no charges as of Monday.
