From Our Readers: Prevent Political Fire From Spreading
Brutally cold air from the Arctic is making its way through the North Central states and into the Northeast, and AccuWeather forecasters say Tuesday will be the coldest day of the winter so far in the region. Temperatures in Alexandria NH reached -5 degrees this morning.
The weather center in Gray ME has issued a warning for dangerously low wind chills until noon — as low as 30 to 40 below zero in portions of northern New Hampshire and west central and western Maine. The dangerous wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, so people are urged to avoid outside activities if possible. When outside, make sure you wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
In Bristol, it will be sunny and cold, with a high near 6 degrees and wind chill values as low as -15. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
The News Café has been going out into the world for more than a year, providing weekday roundups of what is happening locally, statewide, nationwide, and around the world. The majority of the posts are free, with Monday reserved for a more extensive or personalized look at things, offered to subscribers only.
I started this newsletter to present news from all perspectives on subjects I felt would resonate with readers and perhaps prompt them to offer their own views and suggestions on what is important for people to know. It is hard for people to find diverse news sources that provide broadened perspectives on what is put out by advertisement-based media. There certainly is a herd mentality when it comes to much of what is covered in the mainstream press, and too many of the alternative voices are financed by deep-pocketed advocacy groups that want to push their own agendas.
The News Café draws upon credible news sources that can provide information that may be missing from standard news reports or talk show personalities. We’ll sometimes throw in controversial theories that merit consideration, not because we necessarily believe them, but because they offer fresh lines of inquiry that may lead to a better understanding of this complex world.
The exchanges with interesting and dedicated readers have been energizing, but not as frequent or as numerous as I had hoped. Furthermore, the subscriptions to support the effort have fallen short of what I was hoping to achieve when launching the News Café in December 2020. Being a freelance writer, there’s a very direct relationship between my labor and my income. It is nice to get paid for the hours that go into producing the newsletter on Mondays through Fridays each week.
I plan to have the News Café continue to offer that daily information at no charge to readers, but also would like to see a little more financial support from those who can manage to take out a paid subscription. My hope is that there’s enough enthusiasm for the newsletter that people will want to support it with a few dollars a month.
COVID Test Sites Closed Today
With wind chills expected to reach -20 degrees or colder in some areas of New Hampshire, the state’s four fixed COVID-19 testing sites will be closed Tuesday. The Department of Health and Human Services said the outdoor sites in Claremont, Manchester, Nashua, and Newington will be closed because temperatures will be in the single digits.
Officials said there are more than 100 indoor testing locations across the state that will be open, offering PCR or rapid antigen tests. Free at-home COVID-19 PCR tests are available and can be ordered on the state's website.
The testing sites are expected to be back open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
From Our Readers: Prevent Political Fire From Spreading
It has been one year since the Jan. 6, 2021, Trump-led and -inspired insurrection attack on our country by misguided home-grown terrorists who have a warped sense of patriotic responsibilities.
This being an election year, I make this following pledge: Due to their extreme liberal agenda I will not vote for any Democrat in 2022. Furthermore, I will not vote for any Republican who does not publicly disavow Donald Trump for his involvement and condoning of the ungodly assault on the American Constitution and the values this country holds dear.
It is past time for the GOP to get its house in order. I call on all Republican voters to make a similar pledge. Only we can prevent this political fire from spreading. Only we can rescue our American way of life.
