Letter From An ‘Unschooler’
This week’s Laker carries my story about the Meredith Historical Society which last year completed a $50,000 renovation project that included the creation of a timeline of the town’s history.
The society’s museum at 45 Main Street has two floors of historical displays as well as a research library with archives that include material from the town’s past and genealogical files for those looking for information on their ancestors.
The museum has both ongoing displays and revolving exhibits of the artifacts people have donated through the years. Current displays include examples of 1920s women’s clothing and accessories associated with the era of the Women’s Progress Club.
Maine Man Charged In Threats To NH Judge
Christopher Butler, 36, of South Berwick, Maine, faces two Class B felony charges after allegedly threatening New Hampshire Judge Philip Cross. The first alleges a threat of bodily injury during a telephone call to the New Hampshire Judicial Branch Court Information Center “for the purpose of influencing an action by Judge Philip Cross” while the second alleges Butler threatened bodily injury “with the purpose of retaliating against Judge Philip Cross for one of his order [sic].”
A complaint had previously been filed charging Butler with misdemeanor criminal threatening “with a purpose to terrorize any person.”
Harm or threats to certain government officials constitute a class B felony, punishable by up to seven years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Criminal threatening is a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in the House of Corrections and a $2,000 fine.
Update On Officer-Involved Shooting
Chief Medical Examiner Jennie V. Duval’s autopsy on Adnan Husejnovic, 33, of Manchester determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds, constituting a homicide.
Husejnovic had been fired upon by six law enforcement officers during what began as a domestic violence call on June 19. Manchester police officers arriving at the Rite Aid parking lot found an adult woman with unspecified injuries and Husejnovic refused to surrender to police. Following an hour-and-a-half standoff, the six officers, who have not been publicly identified, discharged their weapons, killing Husejnovic. Two of the officers were New Hampshire state troopers.
The woman’s condition has not been released.
Letter From An ‘Unschooler’
Cole Summers, a 14-year-old boy who drowned on June 18 in Utah’s Newcastle Reservoir, had sent an article to Bari Weiss’ Common Sense to explain how he came to own a 350-acre farm and his plans to tackle aquifer depletion. He attributes his success to what he termed “a side movement within the homeschool movement called unschooling.”
“Unschooling is simple,” he wrote. “The kid chooses what to learn, when to learn it, and at what pace. For some kids like me, it provides a level of freedom that many adults don’t even enjoy. When I took control of my education, my parents only had one rule. I had to do at least some of my learning by reading. Everything else was up to me.”
He said he started homeschooling because both parents are disabled, and he started watching videos of Warren Buffett on YouTube “at my father’s suggestion after I asked him, ‘Daddy, how do people get rich?’ I was fascinated by Mr. Buffet’s teachings about how he uses the process of elimination in his decision-making. I guess I was an odd six-year-old. At that time, my parents were trying to copy public school curricula. I asked if I could make studying people like Buffett my school instead, and they said yes.”
He concluded, “When I read articles about other teens struggling with anxiety because of all the stresses they believe only politicians can solve, like climate change, it makes me sad for them. I have friends in public school and every one of them is more capable than I am at something. I’ve heard adults tell them that they can’t do something because they’re ‘just a kid.’ I’ve watched them want to try something and be told no ‘because I said so.’ And there’s always the ‘kids these days’ insult.
“It isn’t that my generation isn’t capable. We just need the freedom, encouragement, and empowerment to show what we can do.”
Café Chatter
On No Easy Answers: I appreciate your reasoned thoughts. It is a difficult issue. I regret how the NRA has become just a gun lobby shill.
On Gun Safety & Censorship: I loved the Smothers Brothers show. No surprise there. I believe there is already a pull back from the 10 Republicans on the bipartisan bill. No surprise there either. I knew it was nothing but a delaying tactic.
